Polycystic Ovaries: a Common Feature in Transvaginal Scans of Gynaecological Patients

چکیده
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovaries (PCO) are described on ultrasound scan as the “presence of 12 or more follicles in each ovary measuring 2–9 mm in diameter, and/or increased ovarian volume (>10 ml)”1. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or disease (PCOD) is diagnosed when polycystic ovaries are associated with chronic anovulation and clinical and/or biochemical androgen excess (typically featured as oligoamenorrhoea and hirsutism/acne, respectively). The Rotterdam criteria1 for diagnosis require any two of the three features. Unilaterality does not affect diagnosis; neither does the location of the cysts in the ovary.

Assessment of ultrasonographic features of polycystic ovaries is associated with modest levels of inter-observer agreement
BACKGROUND There is growing acceptance that polycystic ovaries are an important marker of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) despite significant variability when making the ultrasound diagnosis. To better understand the nature of this variability, we proposed to evaluate the level of inter-observer agreement when identifying and quantifying individual ultrasonographic features of polycystic ovari...
متن کاملPrevalence of polycystic ovaries in women with anovulation and idiopathic hirsutism.
Polycystic ovaries were defined with ultrasound imaging in a series of 173 women who presented to a gynaecological endocrine clinic with anovulation or hirsutism. Polycystic ovaries were found in 26% of women with amenorrhoea, 87% with oligomenorrhoea, and 92% with idiopathic hirsutism--that is, hirsutism but with regular menstrual cycles. Fewer than half the anovulatory patients with polycysti...
متن کاملI-46: Repeat Transvaginal Ultrasound-Guided Ovarian Interstitial Laser Treatment Improved the Anovulatory Status in Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Background: To assess the effectiveness of repeated transvaginal ultrasound-guided ovarian interstitial laser treatment in the management of anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was performed in our department on 27 anovulatory PCOS women who failed to respond to the first ultrasound-guided transvaginal ovarian interstitial las...
متن کاملPretreatment transvaginal ultrasound examination predicts ovarian responsiveness to gonadotrophins in in-vitro fertilization.
The objective of this study was to determine the predictive value of the number of follicles seen by transvaginal ultrasound before gonadotrophin stimulation on the ovarian responsiveness of 166 infertile women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The main variables were patient age, ovarian volume and number of ovarian follicles measuring 2-5 mm on transvaginal ultrasound before ...
متن کاملImpaired carotid viscoelastic properties in women with polycystic ovaries.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess the elastic properties of the carotid arteries in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, asymptomatic women with polycystic ovaries, and healthy controls. METHODS AND RESULTS We recruited the following 60 subjects: 20 symptomatic women with polycystic ovaries attending the reproductive endocrinology clinics, 20 asymptomatic women with polycy...
